About Rokra Karate

Fitness

Feel it's time to get in shape?
With our excellent warm up routines, streching, shadow fighting, pad work and training drills, there is no better way to get in shape. Unlike most sports, freestyle karate works your entire body and not just one specific area. This makes a great overall workout and a more interesting and fun way to keep in shape than visiting expensive gyms or sports clubs.

Don't worry though, you don't have to be a fitness fanatic to join us... in fact we welcome people of all fitness levels and abilities. We will help you to improve your strength, balance, flexibility and cardio fitness through various training exercises and routines.

We also believe that variety is the spice of life, so we never have the exact same training drills night after night after night, in order to keep everything fresh and interesting.

Self Defence

Learn how to defend yourself on the street with our practical and effective self defence system.
Drawing inspiration from other martial arts such as Aikido, Judo, Jiujutsu and Brazilian Jiujutsu... along side our traditional karate methods, Rokra has put together one of the most well rounded mixed martial arts defence programmes available. Ranging from fast and effective simple techniques for children and beginners to more intricate restrains, escapes and holds for more advanced members.

What will you learn?
• Standing strike defences
• Effective techniques to defend against common street weapons
• Ground defence techniques, for when the fight hits the floor
• Escapes from chokes, holds and grasps
• Effective techniques for children against larger and stronger attackers

Sparring

At Rokra we have two types of sparring; CONTINOUS SPARRING...
Continuous Sparring is our effective answer to putting our striking game in use. This controlled, non and semi contact style is aimed to give you experience and confidence in a realistic situation.

KUMITE SPARRING
Kumite sparring is our competition style fighting technique. A points based controlled semi contact sport where only a clear strike will score. Some of our members competed at national level and also some have been involved in the UKASKO Scottish Kumite Team. Our wealth of experience is always growing and for members who wish to test themselves against others at competition level in a controlled and safe environment, this is the perfect opportunity.

Gradings

Colour belt gradings are held every 3 months in Rothienorman and Aberdeen, but this does not mean that every student will br ready to be graded each time. If a student's standard does not reach the required standard then they will be held back until next time. How students progress in the 3 months between gradings is taken into consideration.
On the grading day, students will be judged by a minimum of two instructors. Students will be graded on stretching, hand-foot and combination movements, kata's, self defence and continuous sparring.
A high standard of etiquette is expected of every student, we want you to enjoy yourself, and it costs nothing to be polite. Once you have sat your grading, depending on your performance, scores will totaled up and you will be told if you have passed or not. Medals and trophies are awarded for best performance on the day.
